Online Fraud, an 8 Billion Dollar Industry -9/6/2006
Consumer Reports' 2006 'State of the Net survey' indicated that over 8 billion dollars was lost to online scams over the past two years. Experts in the anti-spam world debated over which method was more effective in protecting users, blocking or filtering.
The blocking technique uses what is called 'challenged-response'; that is, any email is blocked until the sender responds to an email that is immediately sent on the recipients behalf asking the sender to identify themselves for approval. Other experts state that this type of blocking seriously limits the usefulness of email where as only people who know each other before hand can communicate..
[Editorial] Ultimately anti-spam will only be successful by informing the public and educating people so that they do not get ripped off. Blocking the email impairs the Internet usefulness and handicaps its users.
